Lone StarBill Roberts |
The other day when Bill Roberts showed up to play,he was greeted with empty courts and no players on a perfect for tennis weekend morning. But there was one player he befriended who is always willing to hit, never complains, never cheats and gives a great workout: Mr. Wall.
The wall is one of the most under rated practice partner for League Players. Apart from the exercise it can also be very useful to practice your form and technique.
Using a foam ball or a speedball to hit against the wall makes it even more fun.
So, in our tennis challenged environment,Bill met a loyal tennis partner and then drove away in his sleek convertible,a happy tennis player.
Forsyth Courts Renovation Update
Court gets state of the art Center strap adjuster
As the town stumbles through their tennis court renovation project, the tennis strap buckles that control net height continue to rust and slip.
No worries. Someone in town came up with a state of the art apparatus to prevent the strap from collapsing in mid play.
This is expected to save the town a few bucks which they can invest into the engineer who will confirm that the courts need renovation.
And just to make sure all court net straps are addressed the courts now have a standard supply of the adjusters.
The Rumor Mill
Kingston High School Tennis Courts to close ?
The Kingston High School courts may face a storm it cannot weather |
The Kingston High School is in the midst of a multi-million dollar renovation project (presumably to enhance education).
However the architectural blueprints supposedly do not show the tennis courts ! In fact, it is believed the site of the present courts is going to be the 'bus turn around' area where the school buses dropping off kids can make a U-turn.
There is a covered walkway adjacent to the courts that will lead into the new building.
To substantiate these rumors is a 2013 'master plan' developed by the Kingston Rec Department that states that there are far too many courts in the Kingston area than needed . On pages 21 and 24 of the document it states that Kingston has 16 courts ( of course 6 of those courts have weeds growing on them and are abandoned-but why bother about details?) and based on the demographics, the city decided that Kingston only needs 6 tennis courts now and possibly 7 in the next 10 years.
To view the report and see pages 21 & 24 go to:

Is there going to be a rainbow guarding the courts this time around ? |
So 4 courts at Forsyth Park and 2 at Loughran Park makes it 6 courts and one at Hutton Park makes it 7.
Therefore the 4 Kingston High School courts could be the surplus and hence to be relegated as a parking lot where skateboarders will not have to invade the tennis courts
...because there will be no courts !
One-on-one with Saif Ali
Tennis pro, Saif Ali, talks to our readers about the service toss and how to get consistent with it. League players, take note !
An easy way to exercise for tennis
We have published this before but is worth a repeat viewing.
The exercises shown are simple to do,takes about 5 minutes to do and has been tested and found effective by League Players.
(Please turn up volume-and it's not the voice of Ellen DeGeneres !)
How much exercise ?
League Players try to keep in shape to excel in their matches. In fact most coaches agree that even marginally improving your fitness can take your game level up a couple of notches.
Tennis is mainly an anaerobic exercise as opposed to an aerobic exercise like jogging or cycling. What that means is that tennis has short bursts of intense activity followed by a brief rest period as opposed to jogging where you have sustained activity.
In tennis, this short burst of activity does not give you enough time to breathe and you have to function with less oxygen since you do not have time to take full breaths. Hence the term 'anaerobic exercise' is used regarding tennis.
So how much and what kind of exercise benefits
the League Player ?
The answer is : short bursts of intense activity followed by an extended cool down period. For example: light jogging for a couple of minutes followed by a mad sprint for 15 seconds followed by a minute of walking to cool down. A recent NY Times article even simplifies it further : just three 20 second (a total of ONE minute ) of intense sprints in a ten minute work out. We highly recommend this. Try it for a week or two and you will be amazed at the improvement in your court conditioning:
Footprint Erasers
James Steinberg (left) and Matt Canzonetti discuss conversion to solar energy for their club |
Then they went one step further by erasing their own carbon footprints by installing 168 solar panels making Hudson Valley Indoor Tennis (HVIT) the only all-tennis facility in New York to be fully powered by the sun.
"Our solar panels provide power to completely light our tennis courts", said Matt Canzonetti,co-owner of HVIT.
"When we checked our electric meter",added co-owner James Steinberg,
" it was running backwards even with all our lights on !"
That meant they were producing surplus energy with their panels.
Though closed for the summer except on rainy days, the HVIT reservation system for contract times is open for next winter.
We encourage League Players to sign up and support HVIT where you can play tennis on great courts, managed by extremely friendly people and with the knowledge that you are being eco-friendly now that the lights are powered by El Sol.
How serious are you about tennis ?
Take our poll !! ( 1 point for every 'yes' answer )
1. When someone asks about your partner, do you immediately think of your doubles partner ?2. Does a bagel mean more to you than your breakfast staple ?
3. Do you take a surreptitious whiff every time you crack open a new can of tennis balls ?
4. Do you find yellow ball fuzz everywhere in your house ?
5. Do you have tan lines in unique areas ?
5. Is your tennis bag filled with more stuff than you need ?
Score:
1-2 : Serious League Player
3-4 : Obsessed League Player
5 : We feel proud you are one of us !
BREAKING NEWS !!!
Forsyth Park Renovation Update
Court gets new center strap !!
Brand new center strap on Court 2 |
League Players are not going to be unmindful of the ever increasing cracks on the court surface as the town council ponders to vote to authorize payment of $4000 to an engineer to evaluate the tennis courts for repair !
( Perhaps the $4000 is better spent on a tennis resurfacing company who can actually repair the courts rather than have an engineer tell you the courts need to be repaired ?)
A lawsuit waiting to happen... |
